APCA Atlanta Chapter Local Scholarship Program
APCA Scholarship is the flagship program of APCA. In the past, the program only issued national scholarships to the top students selected from the national pool of applicants. In response to the request from Atlanta and Northern California Chapters, a local scholarship trial was introduced into the program this year. Five chapters participated in the trial, helping to increase the total amount of scholarship awarded to $73,000 from $20,000 in 2012. Led by Jackson Ku and Eric Hoang, Atlanta Chapter did an amazing job raising fund for the Georgia local scholarship program and contributed $24,000 to the local scholarship fund.
As the result, 24 graduating high school seniors received the first ever APCA Georgia Scholarship at $1,000 apiece for their impressive academic, community and personal achievements while making a difference in their community. Eight APCA Georgia Scholars attended the Asian Heritage Festival at the beautiful AT&T Lenox Park Campus organized by Atlanta Chapter on 5/21, representing incoming freshmen at Georgia Technology Institute, Northwestern University, Washington University, Emory University and others. One of the scholars, Sherilyn Queen drove four hours with her friend to the festival from Vodasta, GA!
Health & Wellness - Hepatitis B & Liver Cancer
APCA values you as a member. As part of our Health and Wellness initiative, we are sharing information about Hepatitis B so that you are aware of the likelihood the infection can have on Asians. One in 12 Asian Americans have the Hepatitis B and do not know it; untreated, Hepatitis B can cause fatal liver disease leading to liver cancer. Do not be a statistic; take the assessment to determine if you are at risk, and if so, have your doctor do a one-time blood test screening to determine if you are free of the infection. Get yourself vaccinated. For more information, please read the attached Knowing Hepatitis Fact Sheet

APCA DFW Annual Dragon Boat, Kite & Lantern Festival
The Annual DFW Dragon Boat, Kite & Lantern Festival was held
on Sunday, May 20th, at Lake Carolyn in Las Colinas, This was our third year
participating in the event. The festival featured kite flying and dragon boat races,
cultural performances, a lantern festival, plus traditional Asian food, arts
and crafts and educational activities.
Kite were originally used for communication in battle, kites
were invented in China about 2,000 years ago. In the 12th century, kite making
spread to the West. As the handicraft of making kites developed in China, local
and traditional Chinese culture combined to produce beautiful kites depicting
fairy tales, flowers, birds and other animals. Contests testing the
craftsmanship and kite flying skills have been held in China for thousands of years.
The Chinese lantern was the first historically documented
portable light in the world. Lanterns are displayed at the Chinese New Year
Festival and the August Moon Festival. They are made in many shapes and sizes
from small and simple spheres to intricate designs with portraits of historical
figures, pictures of legends and landscapes and beautiful calligraphy. At the 2011 Annual DFW Dragon Boat, Kite & Lantern
Festival our Paddle Happy Team finished 3rd in their division, and this year changing their name to The Blazing Paddles finished 1st in
their division adding another trophy to the APCA ERG case in the Concourse of
The Whitacre Tower! View the photo album. //2012.06.21//

a valuable resource for women and children experiencing the unimaginable burden
of homelessness. They provide safe, nurturing emergency shelter services
designed to get families into transitional or permanent homes in under 30 days.
AT&T volunteers adopted three rooms and a hallway to paint and redecorate
in order to make the residence more uplifting for its temporary residents. The
project was well-planned and beautifully executed, exceeding everyone's
expectation. The story
made into the local newspaper. You can view event photos here. //2012.01.28//
